Pebble Mosaics
For as long as I can remember I have had a love affair with natural materials of all kinds. As a child I would wander the forests, fields, ponds and streams around the farm where I lived and bring my various found treasures home. I was particularly attracted to the pebbles and stones that would glitter at me from the bottom of rippling streams. Not much has changed! I continue to scout about for nature-made treasures just about everywhere I go. Rocks, stones and pebbles get transported to my studio where they line windowsills and adorn tables and give me feedback. Such is the way of materials. Some stones may speak to me for years before they find permanent placement. When the right situation arises they find a new home in a Pebble Mosaic.
I became enchanted with Pebble Mosaic as an art form nearly 25 years ago when I was in England studying Garden Design with the renowned landscape architect John Brooks. He took us on many grand garden visits and it was there that I saw Pebble Mosaic used as stunning decorative and artful utilitarian surfaces. I later learned that Maggy Howarth, also from England, was the contemporary master and scholar of the art form. I vowed to study with her one day. and eventually I did! It was an amazing experience to say the least and I can feel her peeking over my shoulder as I am working saying “not quite right is it?”….or “I love it!” Most importantly, I learned methods to create work that will last for hundreds of years. There is so much more to creating a beautiful yet sturdy Pebble Mosaic than sticking pebbles into cement.
The potentials for Pebble Mosaic are as vast as the imagination itself. They can be used in outdoor or indoor applications including, driveways, walks, pathways, patios, fountains, edging…the list is endless. Look through the portfolio of images below to see examples of some of my work. I welcome your comments and questions. Pricing of work varies depending upon the size and location of the project, complexity of the design and the nature and availability of materials.
My unique and personalized Mosaic pebble pad at my entrance, designed and installed by Victoria Mowrer, is a wonderful example of the creative and customized artistic talent possessed by Victoria.
The pad incorporates stones and other objects collected by me on my world travels in a quilting pattern that reflects my home and my interests. It is thus embedded with special memories and always elicits admiring comments from all who pass over it. — Dr. P. Levin
